In the startup world, the motto is often “move fast and break things.” At Ember, we believe the exact opposite. When you are dealing with a person’s life story, their final wishes, and the grief of their family, you cannot break things. You must handle them with care, precision, and deep respect.

To empower every Icelander to own their story — past, present, and future.
Our mission is two-fold. First, we provide the practical tools to proactively pre-organize your life — from digital accounts and essential documents to specific funeral preferences — long before they are needed. Second, we preserve the emotional legacy by allowing you to build a structured archive of your life. We make it possible to schedule future messages, letters, and voice notes to be shared with loved ones at important milestones after you have passed.
We exist to ensure that when a transition happens, families are not left with confusion and red tape, but with clarity, comfort, and the exact memories you wanted to leave behind.

We envision a future where digital legacy is as normal as having a bank account or an insurance policy. A world where no meaningful photo or family story is ever lost to a forgotten password. Where no family member has to guess what their loved one would have wanted. Where the administrative burden of death is lifted, allowing families the space to grieve and remember.

We operate with a zero-knowledge mindset. We build our architecture so that even we cannot access the private contents of a user’s vault without their authorization. We treat data security not just as a technical requirement, but as the primary currency of our business. If we lose trust, we lose everything.
The Iceland-First standard.
We do not copy-paste solutions from Silicon Valley. We operate deeply within the Icelandic ecosystem. We build specifically for Icelandic legal frameworks, funeral customs, and the kennitala identity system. We connect users with a vetted network of local partners — lawyers, funeral directors, and counselors — who understand the culture from the inside.

We believe that legacy planning should bring peace of mind, not an endless monthly bill. That is why we operate without subscriptions — a simple one-time purchase for a lifetime of security. We earn revenue through ethical partnerships and referral networks, connecting families with local help exactly when they need it, without ever exploiting user data.

How does a team work when their daily focus is mortality and legacy? We stay grounded, grateful, and focused on life. These are the habits and rituals that make that possible.
The empty chair
In every major product meeting, we keep a seat at the table that belongs to no one on the team.
We call it the empty chair. It represents the trusted contact — the family member who will one day activate the vault for the first time under the worst possible circumstances. They will not be in the mood to explore. They will not have patience for complexity. They will be grieving, and they will need clarity immediately.
Before we ship anything, we ask one question: does this help the person in the empty chair, or confuse them?
If the answer is confuse, we rebuild it. The empty chair is always the primary user. The activation moment is always the design brief. This is not a UX heuristic. It is a values test.
Kaffitími
We honor the Icelandic tradition of kaffitími — the afternoon coffee break — but with a deliberate rule: during kaffitími, work is not discussed.
We share stories. We talk about music, about weekends, about things that have nothing to do with death or legacy. This sounds trivial. It is not. When your daily work involves mortality and grief, the temptation is to let it fill every available space. The coffee break is a deliberate interruption — a reminder that we are preserving legacies so that people can enjoy these moments, right now.
The simplicity sweep
Once a month, we conduct what we call the simplicity sweep.
We walk through the full user journey — not as designers, but as someone’s elderly parent using a digital tool for the first time. We time every step. We count every decision. We test with older relatives, not just tech-savvy colleagues. We look for anything that produces hesitation, that could reasonably cause someone to stop.
Then we cut. Legal jargon. Unnecessary confirmation screens. Options that exist because they were easy to build, not because they serve the user. The goal is an interface accessible to everyone, regardless of digital skill, at the worst moment of their life.
Team Legacy Days
Every three months, the team steps away from screens entirely for a day in Iceland’s nature — hiking, visiting hot springs, exploring the landscapes that hold our country’s history. Sometimes we talk. Often we don’t.
We believe that to build a platform about meaningful memories, our team must have the space to create their own. If we cannot be present in our own lives, we will eventually lose the instinct for what makes a life worth documenting. The landscape reminds us. Iceland has a way of doing that.
We also offer flexible Rest Days — because when we are working on your legacy, we want to be doing so with a clear mind and a full heart. We prioritize rest over burnout. Always.
